I am a former radio personality. I spent almost two decades in the broadcasting industry. I admit, I loved it. Today, I am “On the beach” as radio personnel call it and am out of the business. It is not from a lack of trying to find another radio gig. However it is really rough out there and jobs are scarce. To make matters worse, I find myself in a position where no one wants to hire me due to my major market experience. So it was with a heavy heart that I decided that I would hang it up and re-enter the real job market and find a non-radio job. I am not bitter, but there have been times when I just see it as unfair. It is unfair that I am unable to find another gig which happens to fall in the stereotype that I would be too expensive to employ. One program director gave it to me straight and said “your major market experience is both a blessing, and a curse”. I could not agree more. Apparently in their eyes, there are younger radio personalities who are willing to drop everything and move to another city for a lot less than I was willing to accept. That in itself is funny to me, cause I would take a smaller market salary just to get back in it. One night, I was talking to a good friend of mine who works in a smaller market and I was telling him some of my stories that I had experienced during the course of my career. “Your stories are great!” He said with an unusual amount of spunk in his voice. “You should start a blog about them.” Hmmmm, I had never had a blog before I thought. Normally, any writing I would do would be content on my stations web page. It did not take much convincing and eventually I found myself here. As I was customizing my new blog I began to think “What happens when my stories run out?” That was when it hit me. Why not allow other current or former radio personalities to also share their experiences anonymously? The idea seemed simple and yet, the pieces almost all fell together like a very easy puzzle. I felt keeping the blog and its stories anonymous was important. Current radio personalities might not to risk their career and also former radio personalities do not want to tarnish their name in fear that it will prevent them from finding a new gig. Overall, I think this is going to be fun.
